821 Book Discussions: August 2017
The 821 Project's book discussions expose the local community to social justice and multicultural perspectives through literature.
In August, we will be reading "Code Talker: The First and Only Memoir By One of The Original Navajo Code Talkers of WWII." Despite their pivotal role in World War II, Navajo code talkers were not allowed to talk about their war experiences until 1968. This book chronicles the experiences of one of those Navajo code talkers, Chester Nez.
Our topics of discussion will be the following: discussing the role of "code talkers" in World War II, Native American/indigenous involvement in World War II, cultural assimilation and ethnocentrism, the omission of historical events and contributions, and the treatment of indigenous people worldwide.
The discussion is open to both those who have and have not read this book!
Our book discussion on "Code Talker" will be held on Thursday, August 3rd from 6:30-8:30PM at the Goodwood Main Library!
